Review | The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies

I postponed the review of The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies for several reasons. After watching it for the third time, I realized how much I loved it and I’m totally sad that ‘everything’ is over now. I know, the fandom won’t die, but is always sad thinking there won’t be new Middle-earth movies to look forward through the year.

Despite all the (huge) differences with the book, I loved and enjoyed this trilogy and the last film didn’t disappoint me at all. In my opinion we should just watch the films as film adaptations, without trying to compare them to the book. That’s the right way to enjoy them from a cinematographic point of view.

I won’t write a conventional review, because I cannot put all the thoughts together in a proper way, so I’ll follow my friend’s advice making a list of both things I liked and disliked.

  • The initial part in Lake-town is absolutely perfect, in my opinion. And I’m proud of myself for spotting Katie Jackson’s cameo (and Orlando Bloom’s mom as well!). The moment when Bard shoots the black arrow using Bain’s shoulder made me almost cry.
  • New Zealand lanscape porn all over the film. Thumbs up!
  • I enjoyed how they expanded Alfrid’s role giving a funny touch to a movie that, let’s be honest, talks about war and death. I was pretty sure that he was going to die though, because he reminded me (a more silly version of) Grima Wormtongue somehow. But Alfrid lives.
  • Thranduil and Bard being BFF in Dale + Thranduil’s face when Gandalf spoke. Totally loved it!
  • The elven army is my favourite thing in the whole movie. Seriously.
  • Followed by Thranduil fighting in the battle. I mean…
  • Even if I’m a ‘Greenleaf forever’ kind of person, I think there are just too many Legolas moments in this film. But I liked to see him facing his empty quiver for the first time in six movies!
  • How did it happen that nobody noticed Azog’s little tower of power just in front of Erebor before?? Also, Azog’s skirt.
  • Those were-worms are a very silly thing, in my opinion. Azog would win the battle in a couple of minutes using them. But no, they just build ‘tunnels’. However they seem to be in Tolkien’s canon, you can read more about it here.
  • Legolas and Tauriel probably know how to teleport themselves to Angmar, at the other side of the Misty Mountains.
  • I didn’t like at all seeing Galadriel barefoot, once again, carrying Gandalf (!) I mean…! Oh and her glowing green horror moment. But Elrond was amazing, so majestic in that shiny armour!
  • I’m still thinking that Fili needed more lines and scenes (and a decent death!). He would be the future King!
